Distro ?

Linux なんかで、必要なもの一式をまとめて配布しているものを distribution (ディストリビューション) と言うのは、もともとの distribution の意味が配布(配布物)なので普通に納得できる。

数年前(もっと前?)から、「ディストロ(distro)」という言葉がよく用いられるようになって、ずっとひっかかるものを感じていた。でも、DistroWatch.com なんてのもあるから、日本で勝手に使われるようになったものということでもなさそう。

分からない言葉は辞書を引けというじっちゃんの遺言に従って Mac OS X の Dicrionary.app で調べてみた。

ORIGIN by shortening and alteration.

普通 distribution → distri じゃないかとか思うんだけど、なぜか distro の方が Oxford American Dictionary にも載ってしまうほど一般化しているということらしい。webzine なんて言葉が説明に使われているのもちょっと驚いた。

ちなみに Dictionary.app は NeXT 以来の Oxford Dictionary を索くことができるアプリケーション。Mac OS X 上では Cocoa アプリケーションであれば、ホットキー一発で辞書引きができるので便利。和英・英和・国語(日本語)の辞書が付いていればもっといいんだけど……。
